PhD: Development of structured composite coatings of metal nitrides with adjustable functionalities and properties

PhD: Development of structured composite coatings of metal nitrides with adjustable functionalities and properties

Start: October 2026

Duration: 3 years

Location: Laboratoire Hubert Curien, Saint-Etienne, France

The NITRIMIX project aims to develop an innovative method for fabricating homogeneous, structured metal nitride (MN) composite coatings with adjustable properties.

The thesis will initially focus on the development and study of model TiN/ZrN coatings with varying ratios to understand the nitriding mechanisms, demonstrate film homogeneity, and fine-tune their optical properties to design functional metasurfaces. This process will then be extended to other oxides (HfO₂, Ta₂O₅), leading to the development of new composite coatings and, subsequently, new metasurfaces.

Prerequisites:

This experimental PhD project is suitable for applicants holding a Master’s degree or any equivalent training in Physics and/or Materials Science and/or Chemistry. Candidates should have a strong interest in experimental and multidisciplinary work, and demonstrate rigor.
