"Optical models for predicting the color of dental composite resins"

Abstract:

Due to the central role of the dentition on the face, dental surgery is faced with important aesthetic imperatives. Dental restorations, in particular, must be invisible, i.e. the same color as healthy tissue, under a variety of natural and artificial lighting conditions. The practitioner's choice of synthetic dental materials, also called shade matching process, often done with the naked eye under a given light, remains imprecise, and optical methods capable of delivering more convincing results are still to be improved. The aim of this thesis is to develop new optical methods for predicting the color of thin layers of these highly translucent materials, whether deposited on a support or not, using appropriate and affordable optical measurements. The thesis focused on so-called "two-flux" and "four-flux" models, compatible with commercial integrating sphere spectrophotometers, whose parameters were adapted to account for the high translucency of these weakly scattering materials. The predictive performance of these models has been greatly improved compared with state-of-the-art models, opening up promising prospects for the automation of the shade matching process for a given clinical situation.
