Abstract

Every few weeks, SpaceX launches more than one hundred new satellites. And this not an isolated strategy: many companies and agencies are populating low orbits to provide communication or other sensing services. For some years, the probability of crashing two satellites has skyrocketed, and more and more alerts are triggered leading to complex maneuvers. The many perturbations impacting the orbit require to update its parameters more often with higher precision. Space situational awareness is now critical to keep exploiting space. Conventional optical sensors are ill-suited to detect low earth objects, due to predetermined and fixed sampling rates with scenes containing diverse objects, trajectories and magnitudes. Neuromorphic sensors, at the opposite, are designed to be data driven. These properties allow for fast and energy efficient scanning strategies. The International Center for Neuromorphic Systems have shown promising results in achieving satellite detection and tracking, and keeps investigated the potential of these sensors, from deep space to deep waters. This presentation will provide an overview of our latest results and present the next milestones.
