Master Internship - Evaluation of a Distributed Fiber Optic Sensor for Operation in Harsh and Radiation Environments

Host Laboratory: Laboratoire Hubert Curien (UMR CNRS 5516) – MOPERE Group
Industrial Partner: FIBERSIGHT
Duration: 6 months (February 2026 – July 2026)
Supervision: Dr. Hugo Boiron, Pr. Sylvain Girard, Pr. Emmanuel Marin

Context: The MOPERE group of the Laboratoire Hubert Curien (Université Jean Monnet, Saint-Étienne) conducts research on optical fiber sensors and photonic technologies for monitoring and safety applications in extreme environments such as the nuclear industry. In this context, the company FIBERSIGHT has developed an innovative distributed fiber optic sensor capable of simultaneously and independently measuring temperature and humidity along an optical cable. The device operates with two optical fibers: one sensitive only to humidity, and the other to both humidity and temperature, providing a spatial resolution on the meter scale. This internship aims to evaluate the potential of this sensor for deployment in harsh environments, particularly under ionizing radiation, and to characterize its performance under controlled laboratory conditions.

Objectives: The goal of the internship is to assess the performance and radiation tolerance of the FIBERSIGHT distributed fiber sensor and to analyze its suitability for applications in radiative or nuclear environments. The work will involve experimental characterization, data analysis, and interpretation of the results obtained from both climatic and radiation exposure tests.
